Seven pivotal moments that lead to personal growth

During every journey, there are pivotal moments where you remember the person, place, and time when you learned something that changes the course of your journey. There are seven pivotal moments from Steve’s journey shared in this workshop that will help you in your leadership practice.

  1. Emotional Intelligence
  2. Communication
  3. Ambiguity
  4. Imposter Syndrome
  5. Inclusion
  6. Alignment
  7. Why

Steve shares some of the biggest moments when he learned about Emotional Intelligence (EQ). They say EQ dictates 60% of our future success. It is how well we can understand and connect with other people. Leaders are in the people business, so it only makes sense that most of the success is connected to understanding people. The second biggest lesson was in communication which is possibly the toughest task in business, our communities, and world. Third is ambiguity. Business has many unknowns and lives in the grey, two things’ people don’t like. We like yes or no, black, or white, not maybe, or grey. The fourth moment was imposter syndrome. As we take on new roles, try new things and get uncomfortable, we can develop imposter syndrome where we feel like we don’t belong. We will talk about how to work through these feelings. The fifth lesson is inclusion. No one has done anything notable alone. Knowing how to partner with people and leverage those around us will lead to a greater outcome. Number six is alignment. As we continue partnering with people, it also matters how we align with peers, subordinates, and superiors to create a win-win for everyone involved. This requires stellar communication and a mindful approach. Lastly, the number 7 pivotal moment is why. Explaining why we are doing something in addition to what we are doing gains buy in and a better understanding people need to perform at a high level. Practicing these seven traits of a leader will help us be more effective and find greater success.

Leadership is intentional and requires us to be genuine

Join this workshop to dive deeper with Steve into how leadership takes effort. It requires us to be mindful of how we act in each moment, the things we say, and how people perceive us. These are all things that are done with a desired outcome. Whether it’s to grow in your career, increase revenue, bring a community together, or inspire a family, it’s all done with a greater outcome in mind. This requires each of us to be genuine.

Steve breaks this down into 3 parts:

  1. The Genuine Part
People want to work for leaders that care for the people in their scope. Care for their wellbeing, their careers, and their lives. People can see right through someone who is doing it for only the profits and numbers.
  1. The Intentional Part
Leadership takes effort. There are techniques we rehearse. If this was easy, everyone would do it. Leaders are special, because they build trust with others, practice the craft of leadership, learn to trust ourselves, become vulnerable, and listen to others which takes effort, curiosity, and consistency.
  1. The Leadership Part
Leadership is a feeling; it’s how we inspire on the inside and how much people feel we care for them. When we earn trust, what comes next is unstoppable. To accomplish this, we need to know where we stand first, get feedback, take a deep look at ourselves and how we operate. It’s all in the details. How we interact, handle ourselves, and confidence we show.

  1. Trust
  2. Empowerment
  3. Diversity
  4. Communication
  5. Employee Engagement
  6. Motivation
  7. Fun

To build trust starts with a deep understanding of employee engagement, diversity, and communication. Steve encourages participants to study communication skills and listen to their body language to improve their communication skills. He emphasizes to be consistent in how we treat people and how we respond to each other. The cost of trust is the time spent with people, one-on-one time. This is crucial to understand each person’s needs. Steve highlights that employees should be responsible for their engagement however it is on the employer to initiate conversations and provide feedback. He focuses on the constant attention and care for employees, who are looking for more from work than just a paycheck is what provides intrinsic motivation. Even though work is about the dollars and cents, people want to work for someone who is lighthearted and can have some fun. It’s not about throwing parties; it’s about how we interact in a fun manner where appropriate.
